According to the report of Global Times, a Chinese official has claimed that Chinese smartphone companies are now preparing to shift their units from India to Indonesia, Bangladesh and Nigeria. The report cited a recent deal by mobile phone maker Oppo with the Egyptian government for a $20 million (about Rs 159 crore) manufacturing plant. The report said that this deal could become the initial reason for the exodus of Chinese companies from India. Officials associated with the mobile companies told the Global Times that with the Egyptian government to set up a smartphone manufacturing plant facility worth Rs 159 crore. Oppo’s agreement could be a far-reaching step.

Let us tell you that India has intensified its action on Chinese mobile companies in the last few years. The Indian government is investigating cases of alleged tax evasion by three Chinese mobile companies namely Oppo, Vivo India and Xiaomi. During this, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had issued notices to the companies for duty evasion. India has also banned more than 300 Chinese apps, including Tencent’s WeChat and Byte Dance company’s Tik Tok platform.

At the same time, the government is working towards strengthening its domestic smartphone and chip manufacturing sector. The Gujarat government has partnered with Vedanta and Foxconn to invest Rs 1.54 lakh crore to achieve self-reliance in the field of semiconductor manufacturing. There is also news that the Tata group is reportedly in talks with Taiwan-based Wistron to increase the production of iPhones in the country by 500 percent.
